Science Teacher (Biology and Marine)

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

St. Vincent-St. Mary High School’s mission is to provide a dynamic learning environment rooted in faith, academic excellence, and a commitment to nurturing the whole student—mind, body, and spirit. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1. Instruction & Curriculum:
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that reflect an innovative approach to teaching curriculum standards in Biology, Honors Biology, AP Biology, and Marine Science
  • Use diverse instructional methods to accommodate various learning styles and ensure student comprehension
  • Maintain a safe and productive learning environment using appropriate classroom management strategies
  • Design, administer, and grade assignments, projects, and tests, providing timely feedback to students
2. Student Assessment & Support:
  • Regularly assess and monitor student progress, providing meaningful feedback and ensuring academic and spiritual growth
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate regularly with parents and administration
  • Offer spiritual support and counsel to students as needed, nurturing a safe and supportive faith environment
3. Collaboration & Professional Development:
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, especially other department members and school administration, to ensure a cohesive education program
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and ongoing faith formation opportunities
  • Stay updated on current content area-specific research that advances instructional practices
  • Participate in faculty meetings and professional development sessions, which may be held in different locations within the building
4. Compliance:
  • Ensure all instruction aligns with the appropriate curriculum standards
  • Uphold and model the highest standards of professional and ethical behavior as a Catholic educator
5. Technology and Resource Utilization:
  • Use classroom technology such as projectors, smartboards, computers, and other teaching aids, which may require moving between classrooms to access specific tools or resources
  • Collect and return materials, such as textbooks, lab equipment, and supplies, from storage areas, libraries, or other resource centers located on different floors
6. Extracurricular and Duty Assignments:
  • Attend or lead extracurricular activities or club meetings, which may be held on different floors or in different parts of the building
  • Fulfill assigned duties, such as cafeteria or recess supervision, which may involve navigating between multiple levels of the school
7. Physical Demands, Safety, and Supervision:
  • Monitor hallways and common areas: assist in supervising hallways, stairwells, and other common areas between classes to ensure student safety, manage behavior, and maintain orderly movement across floors
  • Respond to emergencies, such as evacuations or lockdowns, following safety protocols and potentially assisting with student movement between floors during fire drills, severe weather, or other incidents
  • Accommodate the needs of students with disabilities, which may involve coordinating with staff to ensure that students with mobility challenges can access all areas of the building
  • Lift and/or carry items weighing up to 10 lb
  • Sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Work on the computer for long periods of time

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in education supplemented by specialized computer courses and 3 to 5 years of experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in education; Master’s degree preferred
  • Certification: Teaching certification or licensure preferred
  • Experience: Prior experience teaching at the high school level preferred
  • Assist all students to meet or exceed 21st-century knowledge and skills, including state academic achievement standards
  • Familiarity or willingness to learn STEAM educational approach and help lead an innovative approach to teaching
  • Expertise with the English language
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong communication, public relations, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • The position requires VIRTUS certification and FBI/BCI background check
  • Strong knowledge of content area and the ability to effectively communicate it to adolescents
  • Passion for Catholic education and the ability to integrate faith into all aspects of school life
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to inspire and lead students in their spiritual and academic growth
  • Capacity for critical thinking, reflection, and continual personal and professional development
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing
  • Lift up to 30 pounds occasionally
