Assistant Athletic Coach

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The job of Assistant Coach is done for the purpose of assisting in designing and implementing the athletic program for the assigned sport in accordance with the applicable rules and regulations.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Provide supervision of students during all aspects of the program
  • Serve as a positive role model to the student-athletes and represent St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in a well-respected manner
  • Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.
  • Be thoroughly familiar with all athletic policies approved by School Administration and ensure their implementation
  • Understand and follow the proper administrative chain of command for student/parent concerns or grievances
  • Maintain discipline and work to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program
COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE STUDENTS:
  • Demonstrate character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship
  • Monitor student-athletes’ grades and conduct
  • Be present at all practices, games, and during travel
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant
  • Provide training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete
  • Understand policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians
  • Determine discipline procedures and communicate with parents when necessary
  • Foster a desire to win, good sportsmanship, personal pride, and pride for school and community
EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES:
  • Arrange for issuing and storing equipment and submit an annual inventory to the head coach
  • Recommend budgetary items for the next year in the program area
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices
  • Ensure athletes are only in authorized areas at appropriate times
  • Check locker rooms before and after practices/games for cleanliness
  • Maintain and ensure cleanliness of specific sport equipment
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving if custodians are not on duty
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property
PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist the head coach with instructing players in rules, techniques, and use of equipment
  • Assess player skills and monitor performance during competition and practice
  • Maintain team statistics and requirements for lettering for the head coach and athletic director
  • Work within the head coach’s framework and assist in determining game strategy
  • Supervise athletes during practices and competitions
  • Attend staff meetings and complete scouting assignments as requested
  • Model appropriate conduct toward players, officials, and spectators
  • Arrive early for practices, contests, and meetings and remain afterward as needed
  • Help plan and implement in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs
  • Avoid criticizing or arguing with the head coach or staff in front of players or parents
  • Remain until all students have left any practice, game, or event
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the head coach
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous coaching experience in the assigned sport is desired
  • Knowledge and background in the assigned sport
  • Must serve as a positive role model for student-athletes through instruction and actions
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Work in standard office, school building, and athletic environments
  • Visually monitor athletes
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking
  • Regular use of fingers and hands
  • Physically fit to demonstrate athletic techniques
  • Ability to lift and move equipment (up to 50 pounds)
  • Swift movement and physical activity as required
TRAVEL REQUIRED:
  • Travel to school buildings, games, and meetings as necessary
