Welcoming Olympian Matt Ludwig to STVM!

Oct 15, 2021

This morning, St. Vincent-St. Mary welcomed 2021 Tokyo Olympian Matt Ludwig to our campus. He shared some lessons he has learned from his experiences with our Emerging Leaders class.

Matt grew up in Chardon and attended Lake Catholic High School. He started pole vaulting his freshman year of high school. After high school, he attended the University of Missouri and then transferred to the University of Akron, where he graduated with a degree in biomedical engineering. He received the call of a lifetime when one of the USA pole vault athletes in Tokyo suddenly tested positive for COVID-19 and couldn't compete in the games. As the first alternate, he was the person called in to help represent Team USA. After clearing his two opening heights he missed all three attempts on the 18.5 feet jump after battling cramps in his calves.

Matt's Olympic journey lasted roughly 4 days, but the lessons he learned, and the lessons he shared with the students will last a lifetime! He shared with the class how to expect more of yourself, appreciate failure, and own your life. He spoke about what his Olympic experience taught him and how he's even more motivated for the future.

Thank you for visiting us! Go Team USA!
