Welcoming Bishop Neal Buckon to STVM!
Sep 13, 2021
Today, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School welcomed the Most Reverend Neal J. Buckon, Bishop of the Archdiocese of the Military Services, USA.
Bishop Buckon stopped into our Leadership Development class, which is taught by Principal Kim Gorr, Academic Dean Kelly Widders, and Dean of Students Tom McKrill. Bishop Buckon shared with the students the importance of character in their formation as leaders, specifically, how important their character is to make key leadership decisions.
Our students also provided the bishop with a description of the Maker Space and shared some reasons about what makes STVM such a special school. President Leo Hyland provided Bishop Buckon with a campus tour, in which our guest met several students, faculty, and staff members. According to Mr. Hyland, Bishop Buckon was very impressed with his tour of the school and was delighted to learn of the Marianist sponsorship of STVM's mission. Both Bishop Buckon and Mr. Hyland experienced the Marianist tradition as high school students at Cathedral Latin School in Cleveland.
After high school, Bishop Buckon received three Bachelor's Degrees (John Carroll University, Cleveland State University, and Borromeo College of Ohio) and later earned a Master's Degree in Church History from St. Mary's Seminary in Cleveland. Before his calling to the priesthood, Buckon served in the United States Army, where he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (3 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Parachutist Badge, and the Army Ranger Tab (RC 11-74).
Thank you, Bishop Buckon for your visit and for taking the time to inspire our students!
