Two STVM Students Named National Merit Semifinalists
Sep 13, 2018
National Merit success runs in our family.
We are very pleased to announce that two St. Vincent-St. Mary students are among the 16,000 semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Jacob Kulig and Deviana Lal will now compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $31 million that will be awarded in the spring 2019.
Over 1.6 million juniors in approximately 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.
To become a finalist, a semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, which provides information about the student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.
The list of about 15,000 finalists will be released in February. National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced April through July.
Senior Jacob Kulig is a four-year member of both the STVM Rocket Team and the STVM Marching Band. He is a member of the Boy Scouts of America (Troop 177) and is working on the rank of Eagle Scout. Jacob is a member of Holy Family parish.
Senior Devianna Lal has participated in many activities at STVM including French Club, Student Council, Spanish Club, Tennis and Academic Challenge. Devianna is a member of St. Vincent de Paul parish.
We are proud to include Deviana and Jacob to our respected group of high achieving Irish students who have previously earned this prestigious recognition.
