STVM "HAPS" Students Use Mathematical Model to Determine Pendulum's Length

Our Honors Algebra II / Physics (HAPS) students were recently asked to find the relationship between a pendulum's period and length in order to develop a mathematical model. Mr. Engels & Ms. Sanor recently took their students down to Green Street Stadium where they showed them a bowling ball hanging from a rope attached to the top of the bleachers. The students were asked to determine the length of the rope holding the bowling ball without giving them any measuring tools. They soon realized that they could use the pendulum models they developed the previous day to find the rope's length if they let the bowling ball swing back and forth and found its period.
