St. Vincent-St. Mary Boy’s Basketball Adding STEM Education to Basketball Camp

Jul 11, 2017

Continuing our strong tradition of collaboration of science with The University of Akron, Head Basketball Coach Dru Joyce and UA have teamed up to add more value to Coach Joyce's three day boys basketball camp. Campers go through a daily 35 minute "hands on" STEM activity that explores the science in basketball seeking to spark the interest of campers in STEM careers.

Seeking to add value to the St. Vincent-St.Mary Boys Basketball Camp experience, Head Varsity Coach Dru Joyce has added a STEM component to this year's camp in hopes of developing a model for Sport/STEM camps of the future. The camp is being held at the LeBron James Arena at St. Vincent-St. Mary July 10th to July 13th from 9am to 3pm. A daily 35 minute "hands on" STEM activity explores the science in basketball seeking to spark the interest of campers in STEM careers.

In June 2017, St. Vincent-St. Mary was awarded a STEM Designation by the Ohio Department of Education. April 1, 2017, STVM Alumni and Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James VM03 posted a powerful message to his Instagram page encouraging his fans and followers to aspire to be something other than a professional athlete. “We don’t need more LeBron’s, we need more physical therapists, scientists, police officers, teachers, doctors, professors, physicists, computer engineers, etc!! I want every kid to know there is absolutely NO LIMIT to what you can be. Your dreams are there for you to EARN. #weneedmore. #striveforgreatness”

Sport provides an optimal setting for inspiring young people to believe in themselves. It is this belief that has motivated the partnership collaboration between STVM and UA for the development of Sport/STEM Camps. University of Akron President, Matthew J. Wilson has given his support to the partnership effort and will visit the camp to engage with campers. Dr. Victor Pinheiro, Professor and Chair of the Department of Sport Science & Wellness Education will coordinate and oversee participating colleges in the STEM education through sport collaboration.
