STVM Announces Alternate Plan for Graduation Due to COVID-19 Shutdown Orders

May 01, 2020

The administration is excited to announce the plans for a special STVM Graduation event to celebrate the Class of 2020! We shared the news with the Class of 2020 during a class meeting earlier today. I will outline the plan in this document with more specific details to follow in the next week.

Graduation will occur on Monday, June 1, 2020 between the hours of 3:00 and 8:00 pm.

Please use this Sign-Up Genius to reserve a time slot. Use the student’s name to reserve the time and reserve one time only. We have allotted up to FIVE graduates per ten minute block of time. We will begin at 3:00 pm and extend through 8:00 pm. Each graduate will be permitted one vehicle with immediate family members (no limos, party busses, RV’s, etc.). Cars will enter the STVM campus from Smith Street (see map below). Students will check in with Mr. Wilsterman and be directed to form 2 lines on either side of Smith Street leading to the building. Upon reaching the stop sign at the intersection of Smith St. and N. Maple St., students will be directed by an Akron Police Officer and STVM staff member to exit their cars for a photo opportunity at the St. Vincent-St. Mary High School sign. One family at a time may exit cars for a picture.

Cars will follow the green route, stopping only for the picture at the STVM sign and again at the stage area. Students should wear their cap and gown and are encouraged to decorate their cars to celebrate the day!

Maple St. and Walnut St. will be closed to allow for a smooth, uninterrupted traffic pattern. The City of Akron and the Akron Police Department have been very helpful in coordinating the guidelines and details of this in-person event.

Upon returning to your car, cars will proceed down the hill on N. Maple St. to the entrance of the lower parking lot and be directed to the stage area. Upon reaching the stage, students and their family members may exit their vehicles.  The student’s name will be announced, along with any special awards or accomplishments earned. Each student will process up the steps onto the stage to receive their diploma from Mrs. Gorr and Mr. Carone. Students will exit the stage and pause for a photo (either alone or with family).

The graduate and his/her family will return to the car and process up Walnut Street through the parade of teachers. Gathering in groups anywhere on the STVM campus is strictly prohibited due to the Governor's orders.

A formal virtual graduation ceremony will also be created and provided to all members of the Class of 2020. The formal event will contain all of the components of a traditional graduation ceremony - singing of the National Anthem, Valedictorian speech, teacher speech, recognition of each graduate, etc. The date and time of the streaming of this event will be announced by May 15.

Please reserve Tuesday, July 21 for a Class of 2020 picnic/party to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates and to enjoy being together as a class (contingent upon Ohio guidelines for large group gatherings). More details pertaining to this event will be forthcoming as we continue to follow the governor’s plan to reopen the state.

An event for graduates and their families to gather as a STVM family will be planned for Homecoming weekend (September 25-27, 2020). More details will be announced as they are set.

While this is certainly not the type of graduation we had all hoped for, we believe it is the best option to allow students to celebrate the end of their time at St. Vincent-St. Mary with their families and faculty members that love them. More information will be made available over the next few weeks, along with information on cap and gown pick-up, chromebook collection, athletic uniform return, etc.

Stay safe and God bless,

Kimberlee Gorr
