STVM Campus to Receive Ohio Historical Marker
Jan 04, 2021
We are excited to announce that St. Vincent-St. Mary was recently accepted to receive an Ohio Historical Marker on its campus! As the oldest operating high school (public or private) in Akron and one of the oldest Catholic high schools in the State of Ohio, STVM (combined with the histories of St. Mary & St. Vincent) has a vast history that will now be recognized through one of the Ohio History Connection's 1,800 markers throughout the State.
The Ohio Historical Marker program is a prestigious award which validates historical significance on a state level. The Ohio History Connection recognized this historical significance and longevity of our institution spanning parts of three centuries and 122 years. This longevity is very rare for a private institution and is a powerful testament to the dedication and commitment of the alumni and community at large. STVM has been honored for its continued tradition of academic excellence, character formation, and social responsibility in the Akron community. Just as Akron was at the forefront of education ideas for the State of Ohio, STVM with its nationally ranked extracurriculars and excellent academics has been at the forefront of education for years.
This honor would not have been possible without the diligent work of Bill Helmkamp V71. With the assistance of long-time (and now retired) teacher Luanne Richardson V59 and his daughter MaryEllen Helmkamp VM00, Bill worked extensively to research and draft the statement of significance for the Ohio History Connection to consider St. Vincent-St. Mary as worthy of this. During the application process, Bill was even able to obtain a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation for over $3,000. This will pay for a large portion of the marker and the placement of it on our campus.
The marker is tentatively planned to be installed on STVM's campus in the fall of 2021, but could be pushed to 2022 depending on the status of the pandemic. The exact location is still being decided.
