Oct 06, 2020

Congratulations to Carla Chapman VM81 for recently being named a recipient of the Ohio STEM Learning Network's 2020 Ohio STEM Innovator Award! Chapman is currently the Director of Community Relations, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Akron Public Schools. When COVID-19 hit, Chapman and her team created the Connectors program.

According to the Ohio Department of Education's website, "Through the program, 254 trained, non-instructional staff members called Akron students to determine their needs, logging more than 10,000 interactions during 52 days of remote learning. The program helped many of the approximately 22,000 Akron students with such things as using unfamiliar technology at home to accessing food, health care and child care. And the program is underway again for the new school year."

Ms. Chapman was a member of the 1979 and 1980 girls State Championship basketball teams at STVM. After her career at STVM, she moved on to continue her academic and basketball career at The Ohio State University. Ms. Chapman has been with the Akron Public School district since 1994.
