Get Set for College - Junior Year
Semester One Scheduled Activities
- All juniors take the PSAT –Wednesday, October 12, 2011-National Merit Scholarship Exam
- All juniors take the PLAN-Wednesday, November 2, 2011-Preparation for ACT and career information
- Attend College-Tech Fair at St. Vincent/St. Mary-October 4, 2011 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. –representatives from about 100 colleges will be available providing information and answering questions for students and parents.
- Keep your grades up. Junior year grades are extremely important.
- Meet with college representatives during lunch here at St. Vincent/St. Mary
- Begin researching colleges of interest: Websites, tours, and information in the guidance department and library may help you with your search
- Parents may call Mr. Rotunda or Mr. Endress, college counselors, at 996-0023 to schedule individual parent conferences if so desired or if they have any questions.
Semester Two Activities
- January 5, 2012-PSAT and PLAN results returned and interpreted to students by counseling staff
- February 28 th from 7:00pm to 9:00 pm is the Junior Parent Night. (Sophomore parents may attend as well). Get the important information to the college search and admissions process. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend.
- It is helpful to have your SAT or ACT score posted on your transcript. If your score is not as good as you wanted and you are taking the test again, call the Guidance Office and we will discuss taking your score off of your transcript. Some colleges you apply for “super score” and use the best parts of the tests you have taken. It saves you money and time having your score on your transcript. If you do not want your score posted do not submit our school code to the test provider.
- Take ACT and/or SAT exam –register on-line or with written materials provided by counselors. St. Vincent/St. Mary’s college code is 360090 it is recommended that students take the exam more than once in their junior year—usually the April and June test dates are recommended for the ACT. Students should also take the Writing portion of the ACT as many colleges are requiring it.
- College Counselors meet in small groups with all juniors during February/March and discuss the college process, share information, and answer student concerns
- Continue to visit college campuses and keep academics strong
- Take Ms Sanor’s ACT preparation class after school here at St. Vincent/St. Mary High School beginning in early February-date and cost yet to be confirmedMay/June-Potential Division 1 and/or Division II athletes should register on-line with the NCAA Clearinghouse. Go to NCAA Clearinghouse.org to do so and notify the guidance office in early Fall that you have done so.
