SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

STVM students won ALL the awards at the Bridge Building contest that was held Saturday, February 17 at the University of Akron. The contest is organized by the local chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. 84 high school students participated from schools including Hoban, Hudson, Woodridge, Marlington, etc. Last year our students won the strength competition, this year we won strength and aesthetics. Matt Gaydos won $75 for the best looking bridge. It was said that it was rare for a truss bridge to win for aesthetics. Nat Simonetti won the strength contest and received $100. Matt Schwenning took second and received $75, Kyle Sickels came in third. The following students placed among the first 15 – Matt Gaydos, Michael Kovarik, Isaac Cabe, Joey Miller, Ryan Porcellato and John Roth. Our bridges did a lot better than last year but the competition was a lot harder, too. Some people actually copied our designs from last year. These students have worked on their projects since December. Congratulations to all! Click here for photos.

Again this year, the OHIO MAGAZINE will publish their April issue featuring Private High Schools.  Also again this year they have selected five of our teachers for special recognition in that issue.  So, please join in congratulating Gerard Neary, Joanna Beyeler, Jen McElhaney, Anne Bickett and Brian Campbell "who are making a difference and contributing to Ohio's commitment in achieving Excellence in Education."

>Showcase 2007 Results

Thank you to all those who joined us for ‘A Roman Holiday’! This year’s co-chairs, Jerry Kelly and Jennifer Ringer, with the assistance of Carla Steiner surpassed the $300,000 goal.     Please join us in saluting these remarkable women for the outstanding job they did.  We profited approximately $315,000! It was a record breaking event - Underwriters, corporate tables and attendance were at an all time high!   Mr. Ralph Bernard was on hand as Auction Item #15 was presented in honor of his beloved wife, the late Florence O’Neil Bernard V33.  Mrs. Bernard loved her alma mater, and like her husband, she also believed in Catholic education.  He generously offered a matching gift of $50,000 again this year for all paddles raised in bid for the Irish Opportunity Scholarships.  It was a fitting tribute to Mrs. Florence Bernard, as his match was met and exceeded, raising $147,000 for scholarships and tuition assistance!   Thanks to Mr. Bernard.  Click here for Showcase 2008 news!

We are excited about our new ski club! Joanne Zaratsian, Ski Club Advisor reports….
The newly establish STVM Ski Club is off to a great start! On Wednesday, January 23 rd there, we boarded the bus with 40 people for the first ski club run. It was a great day and so much fun for everyone involved. All students received lessons and many were taking to the slopes for the very first time. As the night progressed, many students decided to head for the bigger hills! Also, a “great job” goes to the students – they were complimented with outstanding remarks from the Boston Mills Ski Resort staff.
We are so lucky to have had such an overwhelming response to this new club! The bus is full for this year’s Ski Club but if you are interested in next season – please contact Joanne Zaratsian Ski Club Advisor jzaratsian@stvm.com or call 330-253-9113 extension 12. We would like to have 2 buses next season (80 students) and we are tentatively planning for an overnight ski trip to New York. Click here for photos.
