  • TRIP TO SPAIN - Summer of 2007 Bravo

Cassandra Manna, Mandy Paternite, Nikki LaRose, Madeline Presper, John Chapman, Alex Horning, Kim Pilcher and Whitney Porter spent a week in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain visiting the Picasso Museum, The Prado Museum of Art and the Reina Sofía Museum gazing at masterpieces.

The students were accompanied by Alex and Mr. Haas, Mrs. Chapman, Miss  Harmon-who speaks excellent Spanish, by the way, and Mr. and Mrs. Hilovsky. Everyone, not only the advanced art students, were inspired at every turn.

In Barcelona, we marveled at the modern Sagrada Familia Temple that was started in the late 1800's and won't be finished till mid-century. We rested with a cold bottle of agua on the whimsical, mosaic benches in Güell Park. "Everywhere", the students commented, "were beautiful buildings with ornate decorations, gorgeous fountains and huge cathedrals."  Whitney took over 800 pictures!

We all enjoyed a spectacular and energetic flamenco performance and the next night sweated through dance lessons at a flamenco school in Madrid. Everyone ate typical Spanish food which included a lot of seafood and tapas or the Spanish version of hors d'oeuvres. Paella, the national rice and seafood dish of Spain, was served to our table in 30" diameter round pan!  We all learned to appreciate free water and refills in American restaurants. For de stressing, one afternoon was spent at the Mediterranean Sea and another relaxing in The Retiro Park enjoying the beautiful lake and shady trees.

We  attended Mass in an ancient cathedral and later saw a wedding party emerging to songs, palm branches and rice.  Everyone learned how to use the 'euro', ATM machines, the metro, and how to call the USA.

There is a legend in Barcelona that says that if you drink from the fountain you will someday return.  We are all glad to say that we drank from the fountain and cannot wait to go back. Qué fantástico! The next trip is in 2009!

Watch for details in late spring of this year!
